What connects the areas of
electrics and mechanics at our company?
Mechanics & Electrics
"The two departments work very closely together, as we have the requirement that the electrics and mechanics work together optimally to create a mechatronic system. Only in this way can we get the best out of the systems and in some cases push the limits of what is feasible. But this is only possible if there is close cooperation throughout the entire development process."

What is done by engineering during the site survey?
“To obtain a first overview of the work our engineering sifts drawings and electrical plans. Usually a 3D scan is also created which can be very helpful later. We establish first contacts with the technicians and define interfaces for further processing in engineering.”
Procedure of Basic Engineering?
“As a first step we convert 3D scans and as-built drawings into a 3D model so that we can accurately integrate new designs with existing plant components.
Often 3D scans are made of the area that is to be rebuilt / modernized, so that later the new constructions can be adapted exactly to the given. In the first step, these areas are transferred into a 3D model. For this purpose the data of the point cloud resulting from the scan are processed with Pointcap, Recap and SceneLT. With the help of SolidWorks we create a corresponding model. At the same time we develop a rough 3D concept and insert it into the model of the existing plant. Close coordination with the electrical department is important, since the sensors, motors, etc. are designed in cooperation with the electrical department.”
“To get an overview of the inventory, network overviews, IO lists and automation block diagrams are created or already adapted based on the collected information from the site survey. We create define location identifiers, IO lists, cable lists and discuss and define execution standards. In addition we develop safety concepts. In all these steps we work closely with our mechanics department and our customers to find the best possible solution.”
What is Detail Engineering at GEVA?
„All components are designed in all details. Standard parts, such as screws, are added. The design is checked by means of a collision check and FEM calculations. This is followed by the creation of the drawings for production.
Furthermore, the articles are created in the ERP system and the required parts lists and production orders are created.”
„In Detail Engineering we create plans and installation manuals from the documents defined in Basic Engineering such as IO lists, cable lists, plant location codes. Mostly we use EPLAN P8 in combination with ProPanel. Due to a high degree of standardization, we are continuously working on generating electrical plans automatically. In the same way as-built plans often have to be adapted or extended. In this case we adapt to the customer’s drawing system (e.g. Dxf/dwg).
Switch cabinets are manufactured in our workshop in Aachen. For larger or more complex cabinets we cooperate with regional suppliers.“
“The required components/cabinets are discussed and technically explained with the suppliers. After submitting a quotation, the purchasing department can order the items. If problems occur during production, they are solved in close consultation with the supplier. After completion our staff carries out an acceptance test.”
How does an installation typically look like at GEVA?
“During the assembly we take over the management and coordinate the work. We collaborate with local installation companies. In general we stay in contact for daily coordinations with our customers to discuss schedule, progress or problems.
After completion of the assembly the actual commissioning takes place. Here for example drives and controls are commissioned and tested.”
